Spectral Bandos and the Moons of Peril

Spectral Bandos in the events arena at home, ringed by his minions
Spectral Bandos in the events arena at home, ringed by his minions

The first spectral world boss is loose, the three Moons of Peril have their own lairs and their armour sets finally do what they say, and Duke Sucellus completes the Forgotten Four. The three Slayer bosses held back at the end of August are open as well, and the combat engine has been re-measured against OSRS from the accuracy rolls up. Launch is tonight.

Highlights

  • Spectral Bandos - a new world boss who rises in the events arena at home, with warchiefs and a goblin horde around him. He is the only source of the Spectral mystery box, which is the only source of the spectral set, and of Spectral Bandos Jr.
  • Moons of Peril - the Blood, Blue and Eclipse Moons each have a chamber and a drop table of their own. Enter with ::bloodmoon, ::bluemoon and ::eclipsemoon.
  • Duke Sucellus - the last of the four Desert Treasure bosses is open to everybody. He is asleep when you arrive and you brew the poison to wake him inside his own instance.
  • Three Slayer bosses released - the Abyssal Sire, the Grotesque Guardians and the Thermonuclear smoke devil all have their Teleports rows, their bounties and their achievements.
  • Combat re-measured against OSRS - protection prayers are read when a hit lands rather than when it was rolled, you can take up to four hitsplats in one tick, the skull lasts 30 minutes, and freezes break at ten tiles.
  • Launch is tonight - 19:00 UK on Saturday 12 September. The economy resets so everyone starts level; you keep your account and your founder number, and every donation comes back in full as bonds.

New content

  • Spectral Bandos - a translucent violet General Graardor, with Spectral Strongstack, Steelwill and Grimspike taking turns beside him and a goblin wave that tops itself up while the fight runs. The minions drop nothing and damage dealt to them counts for nothing, so killing one costs you a share of the purse. The kill pays a damage-weighted split of blood money and coins, 100 noted anglerfish to every contributor and a Bandos rare at 1/5, and the single top damage dealer rolls the Spectral mystery box and the pet at 1/25 each.
  • The spectral veil - the meter that raises him. Every boss killed anywhere in the game banks into it, weighted so that whatever you camp fills it at the same rate, with a premium for killing in the Wilderness. Revenants and world bosses do not feed it, and it takes about a day of the whole server's bossing to fill.
  • The spectral set - eight pieces, and the mystery box is the only way in. Worn together they carry Phase, which takes a fifth of the target's defence roll for each piece, and Wraith's echo, which repeats a landed hit a tick later for a tenth of its damage, thrown by a translucent copy of you standing beside the target. Both work in PvP and against monsters.
  • Moons of Peril - three instanced chambers under Neypotzli, one per moon, entered individually. Each moon has 500 hitpoints, does not regenerate while the fight is live, and hits three times in one swing with typeless damage that ignores overheads. Each pays three armour pieces at 1/20, its own weapon at 1/26 and an elite scroll box at 1/60, and rises again shortly after it falls so you can loot in peace.
  • Duke Sucellus - the asylum, the mushrooms, the salt, the pestle and both fermentation vats. Brew the poison, wake him, then read the icicles and the extremities. With him open the Magus ring has come off the blood money counter, so the boss scroll is now the dearest thing that counter sells.
  • The Abyssal Sire - open at 85 Slayer, with his Unsired still spending at the Font of Consumption. Spawns now land at the Sire's feet rather than yours, the vents take a damage floor, he can be re-stunned, his minions no longer hit through prayer for the full amount, and everything in the family counts as a demon so demonbane weapons work on it.
  • The Grotesque Guardians - open at 75 Slayer, and they are gargoyles, so Dawn and Dusk have to be finished off with a hammer. The rock hammer is a free row at Blood Krystilia's counter, and the energy spheres in the third phase can be walked into now; they were solid, so that phase could not be finished at all.
  • The Thermonuclear smoke devil - open at 93 Slayer, and the smoke is real. You are refused at the door without a facemask, you cough inside it, and a hit taken bare-faced empties your Attack, Strength, Ranged and Magic and halves your Agility, Defence and Prayer. The facemask is free at the Blood Slayer counter, and the ordinary devils in the cave respawn seven times faster.
  • The Chasm of Fire - Yama sits on his throne at the bottom of the chasm with the Voice of Yama in front of him, and both are doors into the domain. A second challenger joins through the Voice, so a duo now starts from the same room.

Combat and balance

  • Protection prayers - read when a hit lands rather than when it was rolled, so switching an overhead while something is in the air works the way it does in OSRS. A prayer switched on partway through a tick does not affect an attack until the next one.
  • Hitsplats - you can take up to four in one tick, so a multi-hit weapon draws every splat it earns rather than folding them into one number.
  • The skull - 30 minutes rather than 20, reset every time you make an unprovoked attack on somebody new, and frozen while you are in a fight so it can no longer lapse mid-fight.
  • The Moons armour sets - all three were stat sticks and all three work now. Blood carries Bloodrager, a 33% chance per landed hit to attack a tick early; Blue carries Frostweaver, a free melee swing after a bind or grasp is cast; Eclipse carries Eclipse, a 20% chance per landed hit to burn and no PvP speed penalty.
  • Two new specials - Blood Infusion on the Dual macuahuitl drops the double accuracy check and costs you a quarter of your current health whether it lands or not, and Break Shackles on the Blue moon spear frees the target and pays 1.5% accuracy and damage for every tick of the bind it removed. Both need the full set.
  • Burn - up to five separate burns run at once, each costing a point every four ticks, so a stacked target takes the number of live burns as one hitsplat. A sixth is discarded rather than queued.
  • The Crimson kisten - its Brutal Swing special is in, four accuracy rolls behind one hit, shipped as the build OSRS launched with, so a special that connects at all pays the top band.
  • Freezes - run ten tiles from whoever froze you in PvP and it releases.
  • Equipping - putting something on no longer drops your combat target, and drinking a potion no longer resets your combat.
  • Eating - eating on the tick your attack comes up no longer costs you the swing, so the eat-and-hit rhythm works.
  • The Regen bracelet and the Hitpoints cape - both heal you faster, and neither doubles up with the first rung of Rapid Heal.
  • Vengeance - returns at least 1 damage rather than nothing, and a hit of 0 no longer spends it.
  • Monster health - a monster recovers a hitpoint every 100 ticks once nothing has hit it for a while, and heals to full when it gets home. It used to recover a tenth of its maximum every tick.
  • Monster targeting - one already in a fight keeps its target instead of picking somebody at random every few ticks, and hunt range is measured from where it is standing rather than from where it spawned.
  • Barrage and burst - the secondary targets roll their own accuracy against their own magic defence, and monsters casting them obey multi-combat.
  • Magic experience - paid per cast now, whether the spell lands or splashes.
  • The Salve amulet - adds its magic damage properly, and the black mask stands down when the salve applies rather than both counting.
  • Item values - rebuilt to 6,307 rows, with every chase item priced and everything you can spawn worth nothing. Protect Item refuses a slot to anything worth nothing, which is why a Crimson kisten or an Ancient godsword would not stay protected while a spawnable whip did.
  • The world boss drop boost - +5%, down from +50%. It reaches every roll in the game for two hours for everybody at once, so it is a nudge rather than a second drop table.
  • Weapon poison - applies on a quarter of melee hits and an eighth of ranged ones.
  • Guthan's - heals on a quarter of hits, and Elysian blocks 70% of the time and only when the shield is actually worn.

Interface and quality of life

  • The World bosses screen - the room behind the journal's rack. The roster runs down the left and one boss is read out in full on the right: what raises its bar, where it stands, how long it stays up and what it pays, with buttons to its wiki page and to the guide. ::worldboss opens it when nothing is up.
  • The World Events plate - each boss now has its own colour, and every row is a door into the screen above, with that boss's own command kept as the second right-click option.
  • Moderation - bans, mutes and a jail exist and are owner-only, permanent or timed, and a timed one runs down in real time whether you are logged in or not. The jail is the Port Sarim gaol and every way out of it is shut.
  • Larran's keys - a donator rank opens several chests on one click, from two at Donator up to eight at Uber, and the payout is merged so it fits in your bag.
  • Teleports - Raids is no longer its own category; the four raids sit in Bosses under a Raids filter, alongside Wilderness, Slayer, God Wars and Desert Treasure.
  • The Bestiary - lists all three moons, and the collection log has a page for their thirteen items.
  • Achievements - a Moons of Peril ladder that any moon's death advances.
  • Staff commands - a rank, a donation total or an item can be set on an account that is offline, and a bank can be read without copying it into your own.

Client and performance

  • Bridges - players and monsters were being drawn underneath them. Any region containing a bridge deck failed partway through loading, so the deck never came down: the Mage Arena drew as lava with the Maggot King below the floor. It moved around depending on what loaded first, which is why it looked like a boss bug.
  • Region loading - some regions failed to build at all for a related reason, and an ordinary ladder was enough to do it. Ground items, spawns and floor heights all went down with the region that failed. A sweep of every piece of scenery in the game now comes back clean.
  • A new client build is required - the way damage is sent changed shape this week and an old client reads it wrong, so the launcher pulls build 50 before you can log in.

Fixes

  • Your Beaver was a wizard - the pet pointed at an id the cache reallocated, so it rendered as Apprentice Cordelia and had no Pick-up option at all. Anyone logged out holding one keeps it.
  • Wisp, Butch and Yami - they offered an Emote that did nothing, and it chirps now.
  • Teleporting to the blood revenants - it could drop you inside the walled Wilderness Agility Course with no way to walk, teleport or ::stuck out. Nothing is placed on ground you cannot walk off any more, and the same check covers ::revboss.
  • Verzik's first phase - Protect from Magic blunts the bomb by half rather than cancelling it, so the pillars matter again, and a full inventory no longer costs you the Dawnbringer.
  • Sol Heredit - the Triple Attack plays its whole animation instead of being cut off by its own first strike, the shield slam has an outer edge so it no longer throws dust across the whole floor, and the molten sand drip can miss a tile it has already covered.
  • Doom of Mokhaiotl - Rockblock works. Cover was traced as a thin line rather than a shadow, so a rock protected you on none of the Car Slams it should have, and any attack now resets the Burrow Charge whether it rolled a hit or not. A ranged delver can reach delve 10 on a single inventory.
  • The Whisperer - the columns tell you their health while you are in the Shadow Realm, each chip draws a real hitsplat in both realms, and four animations that were overwriting each other each get their own tick.
  • Armadyl plates - beating Armadyl armour into plates with a full bag silently destroyed two of the three and told you it had made all three. The overflow lands at your feet now.
  • The moons - Blood Moon's third hit healed the wrong amount, all three could be hit by a cannon, and the jaguar phase never lit the glyph it tells you to run to.
