Treasure trails

Hard, elite and master clues, the four step types, and the caskets that are the earned route to the cosmetics.

Clue scrolls run on Old School's own trail screen. Three tiers ship - hard, elite and master - and the caskets at the end are the game's earned route into the cosmetic lane the donator boxes sell.

Getting a clue

Scroll boxes drop off the boss tables and the Wilderness tables, and they stack. Opening one gives you a scroll of that tier if you do not already have one running.

::clue says what trails you have going and what each one wants next. Every step in the game is listed on the clue steps page.

The four step types

  • Dig - a spade on the named tile.
  • Search - a specific piece of scenery.
  • Kill - a monster, named on the scroll.
  • Hot and cold - the stepping game, which tells you whether you are closer than last time.

Two helpers follow the last trail you read: a hint arrow on the tile, and a marker on the world map. Reading a different scroll moves both.

The tiers

Hard trails are the shortest and the safest. Elite trails are longer and reach further out. Master trails always end in the Wilderness. That is the point of the tier, and it is why the scroll itself is tradeable: a trail is loot, so somebody can take it off you, and progress may never outlive possession of the scroll.

The caskets

A finished trail pays a reward casket of its tier. The cosmetic prestige items - the third age pieces, gilded gear, the masks - are in there, which is what makes a trail worth running rather than a chore between kills. The Clues tab of the collection log has three pages tracking what you have pulled.
